Permaculture in Barolo, the vegetable garden

Cellar, rooms, vegetable garden, educational farm.

The Germano family is made up of various companies and tourism realities, in fact Davide Germano carries on the centuries-old wine tradition by managing the vineyards, the winery in La Morra and the rooms of Casa Svizzera in Barolo, while his sister Viviana Germano has started a new innovative fruit and vegetable farm that follows the synergistic agronomic practice, the company is called il Bosco delle Galline Volanti (the Wood of Flying Hens), along with the cultivation also takes care of welcoming tourists offering various opportunities, from visits to the cellar to guided sensory tastings, from museum tours to schools educational tours.

In the premises in Barolo there is the sales point and the kitchen where the products of the freshly harvested vegetable garden are transformed into long-life products (appetizers, jams, etc.) and in the rich breakfasts served at the Casa Svizzera rooms or in delicious traditional dishes served during tastings.

Always in the same premises there are three educational paths that interweave and illustrate respectively: the complex SOIL system and the practices of synergic agriculture, agricultural products and their transformation both in the tradition and in the most innovative starry kitchens, the secular history of Germano's family.

Synergistic agriculture and soil fertility

In the vegetable garden of the Flying Hens, every agronomic aspect is aimed at preserving and improving the fertility of the soil, this means: minimum tillage, perennial cover of the soil with mulches, drip irrigation to optimize the use of water and avoid leaching. But this is not enough, the microorganisms that populate the soil are of fundamental importance to grow strong and healthy plants with particularly developed immune defenses, and so we do not use pesticides, not even copper or sulfur, instead we experiment mycelia, mycorrhiza and decoctions of spontaneous herbs with a good success.

Other works are hand made as defense from weeds that would suffocate the harvest or the defense against locusts and bugs that is made with the help of protective nets.

With this method of cultivation you have the guarantee of having healthy plants and consequently fruit and vegetables safe and rich in nutrients.
